Colorado employment discrimination: Religious beliefs

This country was founded by those who left their homelands in order to have religious freedom. It is a right that everyone should have the ability to enjoy. Unfortunately, some Colorado residents may find that they are the victims of employment discrimination because of their religious beliefs. This can make finding jobs or going to work every day a nightmare.

Religious discrimination can come from fellow co-workers, clients or employers. When it comes to fellow co-workers or clients, this discrimination is often in the form of harassment. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, in order for harassment to be deemed discrimination it has to create a work environment that the victim feels is hostile or offensive. This generally goes beyond simple teasing. It has to be frequent, or if it involves an isolated incident, that incident has to be severe in nature.

As far as employers are concerned, the EEOC states that one’s religious beliefs cannot be held against him or her when it comes to hiring, pay, promotions, training, job assignments and benefits — among other things. Regardless of one’s religious affiliation, being treated fairly when either looking for a job or after work is found is a legal right. If that does not happen, legal actions may be pursued in order for the victim to seek compensation.

It is sad that employment discrimination happens because people fear what they do not understand. Colorado residents have the right to worship how they wish. If they are accosted for those beliefs or treated unfavorably by employers, fellow employees or customers, they have the right to file civil claims against those responsible. With the assistance of an experienced attorney, victims of religious discrimination in the workplace can seek full and fair compensation for any resulting losses experienced as a result.
