Employment discrimination may be common — does not make it right

When employees are frequently exposed to discrimination in the workplace, it can have a great impact on both their personal and professional lives. Sadly, employment discrimination, in its many forms, is very commonly experienced by Colorado residents. Just because it is common does not make it right or acceptable.

According to a recent study by VitalSmarts, of 500 respondents, 49 percent say that they experience discrimination in the workplace on a frequent basis. Of those, 66 percent claim that the discrimination directly affects their work performance, motivation and commitment to their employers. The types of discrimination these individuals have been exposed to are all over the board, including race, age, religion, gender, pregnancy and disability — among others.

It is believed that most people who experience workplace discrimination do not report it simply because they are not sure how to handle the situation. In fact, 60 percent of those involved in this study say that they are unsure of what to do and how to prevent further abuse. The truth is, nothing can get better if the problem is not shared.

Employment discrimination is not something anyone should have to put up with while simply trying to provide for themselves and their families. Being subjected to such treatment makes going to work a nightmare, and no one should have to feel that way. Colorado residents who believe that they are the victims of discrimination in the workplace may be entitled to take legal action in order to seek compensation for any resulting economic and non-economic losses they have experienced as a result.
